"The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk" is the first international exhibition about the unique work of the french designer. The exhibition is a true spectacle and includes the most iconic haute couture and prêt-à-porter pieces, as well as creations for cinema and theater.
Over 140 ensembles dated back from the 1970s to the most recent years are organized into seven themes, highlighting the designer's influences through his life. The pieces come to life with videos displayed on the faces of custom mannequins, giving the impression of living and talking models. But even if the mannequins are truly exquisite, it's the actual artwork that steals the show. The seven influences in which the exhibition is divided into include "The Odyssey", with all the sailors, mermaids and religious iconography and "The Boudoir", with the designer's fascination for lingerie, including Madonna's bustier and bras. Gaultier was the stage costume designer for Madonna's 1989-90 Blond Ambition World Tour, that included the iconic cone-shaped bra.
There are also creations for other international stars such as Kylie Minogue and Beyonce. Other interesting pieces include the Samurai inspiration pieces, the Africa Collection and the Chic Rabbis from the early 1990s. The exhibition originally opened at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and it's scheduled to appear in Australia and Europe within 2014. It is currently hosted at the Brooklyn Museum until February 23rd.
