I used to hate watching old movies. That is until I saw the 1963 film "Charade", starring Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant. Its suspenseful plot line, which includes three sketchy men chasing Hepburn through the streets of Paris, was good, but what really got my attention were Hepburn’s sartorial choices. I could not take my eyes off of her colorful array of matching coat and hat sets. I spent the next few days with my eyes glued to my computer screen, watching every single one of Hepburn’s films.
But it seems I was not the only one inspired by Audrey’s style. This past Winter, a handful of designers presented candy colored coats. The pastel pink coat became a wardrobe staple for the fashion crowd, with the best options coming from Carven and Simone Rocha. It was not long before the trend trickled down to Zara, and suddenly everyone owned a colored coat.
For this summer, I decided to put a spin on the fad with a lighter summer coat from Kate Spade. The rounded collar and big buttons are inspired by the very coats Audrey sported. I have layered the coat over my old high school graduation dress from alice + olivia (thank god it still fits). The bright white dress brings out the embroidered white flowers of the coat, and the coat’s pastel color even blends in with the rose colored buildings in Split. I know my perfectly matched outfit would receive Hepburn’s approval.
